When Nate Stout joined The Groundhogs in spring 2004, founding members Josh Gates and Chad Fell knew their search for the right drummer was over, and the band's sound solidified into something more powerful than the sum of its parts. Stout's aggressive skills behind the kit, natural stage presence and genuine love of playing music added to the band's personality as a whole, and he regularly switches places with Gates during shows for a couple of songs, singing and playing guitar while Gates takes a turn on drums.

Stout has been active in the Corvallis music scene for years, mainly as a drummer, but he is also a competent guitarist and bassist. At parties he can often be found leading boisterous group singalongs with an acoustic guitar. He has drummed in an AC/DC cover band, an atmospheric new-wave group called Exitmusic, and Corvallis punk band Rectal Recess, among others.

He met Gates in early 2002 and they started jamming frequently, and since both could play guitar and drums, they played each more or less equally, switching whenever they felt like it. They named their two-man band Peter Fucking Frampton and wrote the cult classics "Crackhead James" and "Smoke Anything." PFF's career never took off, however, and their one show was cancelled when the house party they were going to play was shut down by police.

Stout and Gates continued to jam for their own amusement and eventually drifted apart, until one day in 2004 when they ran into each other at a coffee shop and Gates invited Stout to sit in with the Groundhogs, thus ending a tedious period of fruitless auditions.

After long battling problems with drug abuse, Stout decided earlier the same year to turn his life around and enter a recovery program.
